The Heresy of Ecumenism
From its first appearance at the beginning of the twentieth century, ecumenism developed in
three concentric circles, in order to promote the unity of divided Christians in both practice and theory.
The
first circle encompassed rapprochement between Orthodox and the heterodox ecumenists by means of a very broad spectrum of syncretistic coöperation at all levels.
The
second circle encompassed the development of a special theology, so-called “ecumenical theology,” on the part of Orthodox ecumenists.
The
third circle encompassed theological dialogues
per se, bilateral and multilateral, between Orthodox and heterodox ecumenists.
• The common center of these three circles, and the precondition for their development, was and continues to be the following ecclesiological heresy: heterodox communities (Roman Catholics, Protestants, Monophysites, and Nestorians) are in a state of schism vis-à-vis the Orthodox, but certainly find themselves within the “boundaries” of the One Church; that is, between heretics and Orthodox there exists a putative “invisible” or “mystical” unity, which must be made “visible” by way of ecumenical activities.
